2. Get Started

To get started configuring the Edge One™ Modbus module, follow these steps:

  1. Understand the requirements for your environment.
  2. Create a project
  3. Configure the RTU, TCP or RTU over TCP parameters for Master or Slave operation.

Requirements

Here are the first few things you need to find out to configure the Edge One™ Modbus module:

1. What is the physical connection?

  • Modbus RTU uses RS-485 or RS-232.
  • Modbus TCP uses Ethernet.

The hardware gateway used to configure the Edge One™ Modbus module must have the electrical interface of the equipment you want to connect.

2. How are the registers mapped?

When using the Edge One™ Modbus module to interface a Modbus device, you need to get documentation from the equipment manufacturer that describes the available registers and how to address them. Modbus protocol does not provide a means for registers to automatically identify themselves. You must consult the equipment manufacturer.

3. What are the communication parameters?

Modbus RTU requires that you know or define:

  • baud rate,
  • data format (8 bits no parity, etc), and
  • slave ID (aka slave address, unit number, unit ID).

A mis-match in any of these will result in no communication. For details, refer to the Modbus RTU Configuration documentation

Modbus TCP requires that you know or define IP addresses on the network. In some cases, you also need unit ID’s. Modbus TCP devices may use the unit ID, or may ignore it, depending on the device and the application.

Creating the Modbus Project

The following steps are required to connect and configure Modbus devices on the Edge One™ platform.

  1. Login to the Edge One™ platform.
  2. Select “Gateway” then Projects on the left panel navigation bar.

Configuring a Modbus Project

Configuring a Modbus project requires a few simple steps:

  1. Create or Open a Modbus project as indicated above.
  2. If it is a new Project continue to 3 below. If it is an existing Project, Press the Configure button as shown below.
